For one evening on a first trip, Namsan — the walk down through lit woods to Myeongdong is half the experience. For a rainy night or a second visit, Seoul Sky.
The Free View, and When It Is Enough
Namsan's plaza and terraces are open around the clock, cost nothing, and give you the city spread out below with the mountains behind. Most of what people photograph from the tower is available from down there.
What the ₩29,000 buys is height and glass: distance markers around the windows, a café at altitude, and the ability to look down rather than out. On a clear winter night that is a genuinely different view. On a hazy August evening it is the same view through a window.
So the honest rule: go up to the terraces first, look, and decide there. The ticket office is at the base and nothing is lost by choosing on the spot.
Across the river, Seoul Sky has no free equivalent — but Seokchon Lake five minutes away gives you the tower reflected in water for nothing, which is the photograph most people actually want.
Timing, and the Air
The hour before sunset and the half hour after it is the window everyone wants, which makes it the queue at the cable car and the busiest reservation slot at Seoul Sky. The half hour after sunset is better than the half hour before: the sky still holds colour and the city has switched on.
Air quality decides more than the weather. December to March is frequently hard and clear, and the view reaches the mountains. March and April bring fine dust that can flatten either deck to a grey wall, and midsummer humidity does the same. Both operators publish visibility information; it is worth a look before committing ₩31,000.
Weekday mornings are the quiet extreme at both. Nobody photographs Seoul at 10:30 on a Tuesday, which is precisely why it is pleasant.
