Gangchon Rail Park: Rail Bikes on a Disused Line

You are assigned a rail bike — a steel frame on railway wheels with two or four seats, pedals, a brake and a canopy — and set off at a fixed departure time in a loose convoy with everyone else in that session.

The route runs along the old track beside the Bukhan river: cuttings, embankments, a bridge over the water and a lit tunnel with an installation inside it. It is downhill-ish and undemanding, and the pedalling is light enough that children manage it.

At the far end you leave the bike and board a shuttle train back, which is part of the ticket. Some operators run a longer combined route with a second bike section.

The whole thing takes about an hour. It is not a thrill ride and it is not a workout; it is a pleasant hour on a railway line that no longer has trains on it, and the river scenery does most of the work.

The area sits near Gapyeong and Gimyujeong on the Gyeongchun line, reachable from Seoul by ITX train or the ordinary subway line in around ninety minutes on a transport card. Both stations are close to the rail-park entrances, and free shuttles connect the tourist stops in the area.

The standard day pairs the rail bikes with Nami Island fifteen minutes away and, on many itineraries, the Garden of Morning Calm or Petite France. Doing all of it independently is possible using the Gapyeong shuttle bus, which runs a circuit of the attractions on a day ticket.

A guided tour from central Seoul takes the logistics away and costs from about $70 including the island and the bikes. For a group of four, doing it independently is meaningfully cheaper; for two people with a fixed day, the tour usually wins on time rather than money.

Autumn is the season — the river valley turns and the line runs through the middle of it.
